WICHTIG: Saisonstart!! (Ice Hockey Returns to Germany!)
The Summer break has ended for the Frankfurt Midnighters and the new Ice Age has begun! The Midnighters took to the ice for the first time of the new season Friday night at the Mainz Arena, home of the world's brownest ice. The training session included two goalies, 18 skaters, two goals with the twine nearly busted completely out, and an ice surface with piles of brown slushy spots just to make things more interesting.
My German is horrible, but from what I gathered, the owner of the arena is having the outside of the roof redone (at a cost of nearly 400,000 Euro). It was raining in Mainz Friday night and the water seeped through the unfinished roof, ran along the varnished wooden support structure, and then dripped down onto the ice surface, creating a grid of icy brown stalagmites. Hearing the Zamboni shave them down made me think the next big bill the owner is going to see is a new blade for the resurfacer.
Here's to another season of the best water sport ever invented. No. The best sport, period.
Stars Win Championship
Once again the tenacity of the Frederick Stars out lasted the much younger Capital Punishment. The fireworks began quickly with a crushing slap shot from Dave “Hammertime” Hammer. Dave had just returned from his summer spa trip to lovely Park Rapids, MN where local springs provide the elixir of youth! This put the Stars up to a quick 1-0 lead in the first 30 seconds of the game! Unfortunately the rest of the period was less than our stellar quality of play. Although we were down 4-2 at the end of the first period there was no quitting on the bench.
Guenthner Beats Odds
It's official. Scott Guenthner, of Myersville, MD, will be a candidate on the ballot for Maryland State Delegate for district 4a (Hey, that's us!). Guenthner will be running unaffiliated against a lot of other, um, affiliated people. Say it with me... unaffiliated. The first one of those in a really long time... dozens of years I'm told. Check out Guenthner's campaign site at MD4Guenthner.com.
Congratulations, Scott, for passing this first huge hurdle!
